Intersection improvements are complete at Tinsmith corner on Kangaroo Island and the new street lights were switched on for the first time on Monday night, July 15.

Following some serious vehicle accidents at the Playford Highway and Tinsmith Road intersection, the KI Council obtained funding from the Federal Government's Black Spot Program to improve safety at the intersection.

Mayor Michael Pengilly said the funding was administered through the State's Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI).

DPTI asked the council to provide a quote for the improvement works, which involved installing lighting and improving the site distances at the intersection.

The council was successful in its quote and commenced work in April this year.

The council completed the vegetation clearing and trimming of the embankment and engaged a local contractor for the electrical works and an off-island contractor to complete the line-marking upgrades.

Except for some minor final tasks, including landscaping, all works are now completed.

The lighting is switched on and with the significant improvements to site distances, the improvements have created a much safer intersection, Mr Pengilly said.
