KI young gun Damon Freitag kicking goals in SANFL

Kangaroo Island young AFL star Damon Freitag continues to do well playing in the SANFL Under 18 competition.

Late last month, he was named the SANFL Under 18 Player of the Week for his efforts playing with the South Adelaide U18 squad.

And Damon was also recently selected as a representative in the State Under 18s side, travelling to Perth, Geelong and Melbourne with the team to play representing SA.

He played three of the four matches and SA went 2 and 2, finishing third. His mum Maxine and older brother Jayden traveled to Geelong and Melbourne to watch him play.

Damon does come back to the Island regularly between school and footy commitments.

Damon just turned 18 in March and attends Marcellin Technical college in Adelaide, where he is studying construction, with an eye to getting into the carpentry or building industry.

He last played football for Wisanger in the Kangaroo Island Football League in the A Grade back in 2017, and he won the Pharmacy Medal the year before playing in his final year of the colts.

South Adelaide Football Club football manager Warren Ploenges said the next step for Damon would be to play a key role in any Under 18 team finals success should they make it.

"Then there is the possibly of being drafted or rookied into AFL ranks at this year's National AFL Draft," Ploenges said.

"But if overlooked at this point, season 2020 would see Damon progress into senior ranks at South Adelaide playing reserves football and pushing for selection at league level at some point."

Damon said he would relish the chance to play professional football and was keen to keep playing for Souths and, if the chance came, in the AFL.

For now, he is focused on getting his side to the finals playing up the front as a ruck/forward and Souths are a good chance, sitting fourth on the ladder.

"We had a good game on the weekend and are on form to make the finals," he said. "If we keep winning we will get there."

He is always keen to get back to the Island and agreed it would be great to make it back home for the 2019 KIFL Grand Final, this year at Kingscote.
