The Kangaroo Island RSL sub-branch with support from KI Legacy will conduct a Vietnam Veterans Day commemorative service at the Kingscote Memorial Park at 11am this Sunday, August 18.

KI Legacy chairman Pierre Gregor will officiate at the service.

Vietnam Veterans Day was based on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966, however in 1987 the then Prime Minister Bob Hawke decided to recognise the battle as symbolic of the broader operational service of those who served during the war and declared the day Vietnam Veterans Day.

Mr Gregor said KI had a number of residents who are Vietnam War veterans. The Island also lost one of its sons, Timothy Turner, to the war.

"I am hoping that Vietnam Vets and the general public alike take an hour out of their schedules to attend the service," Mr Gregor said.

The Aurora Ozone Hotel is providing a free drink voucher for Vietnam vets attending the service.
