Patrons Day opens lawn bowls season on Kangaroo Island

Opening day for the 2019/20 season is sponsored by the Patrons of the Kangaroo Island Lawn Bowls Association.

The format for the day was a fours competition with the players from the three clubs mixed for a fun day. Seventy two players attended the event and had an enjoyable day.

Birchmore had the pleasure of hosting the day with the overflow of players hosted by Kingscote.

President of the Association Leonie Bell welcomed everyone, thanked the Patrons and opened the season.

Two games of 10 ends were played with a delicious afternoon tea had after the first game.

The weather was a mixed bag with sun, overcast, a sprinkle of rain and back to sun again. After the dust settled two teams were on equal points so it came down to who had the most shots up.

Coming in second place with 54 points and 14 shots up were Daryl Stienwedel, John Price, Baden Florance and Gavin Platten. Winners of the Patrons day for 2019/20 with 54 points and 24 shots up were Graham Morris, Rod Cowin, Peter McGill and Fred Muller.

All players would like to thank our patrons Stuart Boxer, Terry Bennett, Betty Collins, Charles Bell, Helen Barrett, Peter McGill and Val Lockett. - Peter McLean

President's welcome

Welcome all and thank-you Birchmore president Jenny Clifford for the use of Birchmore's facilities for the 2019 KI Patrons Day.

I would like to introduce the patrons from each Club, Kingscote has Charles Bell and Helen Barrett, Birchmore has Terry Bennett, Stuart Boxer and Betty Collins, Parndana has Peter McGill and Val Lockett, who was unable to attend.

Today we honour the patrons of each club for their support and contribution to bowls on Kangaroo Island. Thank-you for your donations towards the raffles for here and Kingscote.

I thank tournament director Mark Capon for organising this tournament and I wish you all good bowling for the 2019-2010 season.

I would like to congratulate Parndana on their determination on attaining their new green and wish them all the best for the future.

I would also like to congratulate Kingscote, last year's winners of the Country Carnival, a first I believe for the players all coming from the one club.

I would now like Kingscote patron Charles Bell to send the jack down, followed by a bowl from Birchmore patron Betty Collins and a bowl by Parndana patron Peter McGill.

Thank-you, I now declare our season officially open and wish you all a good year of bowling. - Leonie Bell, KI Bowls Asssociation President

Kingscote bowls news

The Kingscote Bowling Club enjoyed their most successful season ever in 2018 -19. They won the Pennant for the Thursday's Ladies Competition and also the Open Gender Pennant on the Saturday.

This was followed by an incredible effort at the Men's and Women's Country Carnivals when Kingscote won three of the six events, an amazing result for such a small Club.

In the 2019 -20 season we are hoping again for success on the green and we are also endeavouring to upgrade our lights.

We are looking forward to competing against the other Clubs and playing on the new green at Parndana. - Linda Werner
