The KI Council at its October council meeting agreed to provide a self-supporting loan of $60,000 to the Parndana Bowling Club for it to purchase its synthetic bowling green.
Clr Peter Denholm spoke about the importance of the bowling clubs to the identity, culture and well-being of Kangaroo Island communities.
Clr Graham Walkom unsuccessfully attempted to pass an amendment ensuring the loan was secured.
This motion was defeated after it was deemed unnecessary with Clr Sam Mumford offering to back the loan personally.
Clr Rosalie Chirgwin said she was concerned about this setting a precedent for other groups to seek loans.
Mayor Michael Pengilly said he personally far preferred a loan that would be paid back rather than an outright grant of ratepayers' money.
He said the council had previously acted as an guarantor on loans for community groups.
Former mayor Jackie Kelly OAM was present to represent the Parndana Bowling Club and answer any questions.
The loan would be set a variable interest rate but could be locked into a set rate at any time.
