The Kangaroo Island Gallery, on Murray Street in Kingscote, is off to a great start for our new year.
At the recent AGM we elected a new committee for much of the "behind the scenes" work, and celebrated the contributions of two of our valued and hardworking members - Peter Hastwell and Anne Morrison.
We are a community gallery, so all the tasks to do with running the gallery are performed by the members. We are very fortunate to have multi-skilled and generous people who do much of the heavy lifting.
Peter Hastwell, as well as participating in many of our exhibitions, has been actively involved in the running of the gallery for over 10 years.
He has been president, treasurer and tireless committee member. More recently, and less publicly, he has been instrumental in upgrading and modernising various documents to do with policies and procedures of the gallery.
There is always paperwork, and Peter - as the "quiet achiever" - has sought to smooth our path through it.
In addition, as the membership co-ordinator, Peter keeps our membership records up to date and inducts new members (and volunteers) so that they feel welcomed and informed.
Anne Morrison is also a treasure! She is kept busy providing her beautiful glass pieces for general sale and for our exhibitions, but no money would change hands without her.
While she has been treasurer and general committee member over the years, she has been the finance officer for a long time; this means that she pays the bills and, importantly, the artists, reconciles our finances and prepares the financial report for our regular committee meetings.
Life membership is a prize that is offered to those whose contributions add substantially to the well being and /or operation of a group. It is an honour well deserved by these two.
The valuable work of people like Peter and Anne allows the Kangaroo Island Gallery to operate smoothly and successfully so that we can open our doors to Islanders and tourists in search of the perfect keepsake. - Denise Harding
