Kangaroo Island junior cricketers engage in East vs West competition

East vs West Under 14s game played at Parndana on November 23, 2019

Saturday saw the first East v West Under 14s Junior cricket round consisting of a combined selection of Under 14 Junior cricketers from all Kangaroo Island clubs and coached by Ray Wadsworth East and Clayton Morrison West.

The concept has been added this year to further develop junior cricket on the island and will be used as a trial for future selections of a representative team to head off island early next year to compete in the Fuller shield.

The two teams were selected to ensure an even contest and that is what we got with the West team winning the toss and electing to bowl.

The East team managed 156 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Top run scorers were Colton Trethewey 26, Timmy Turner 28, Cain Florance 22 and Callum Putland 18.

The pick of the bowlers were Tyler Richardson 2 for 22 (Richie Benaud figures) and TJ Warren 1 for 7 with two maidens. Several other bowlers contributed to the wickets and keeping the run rate down. Some clever fielding saw a couple of runouts which kept the target very gettable.

The West team came out to bat with Koby Henderson opening the batting showing that he has ability well above his age.

He survived 2 dropped catches and showed true composure to go on and make 50 not out. With a mini top order collapse it was up to Ryan Stoeckel to steady the ship and join Koby to get the run chase back on track.

Ryan made 35 not out. Also Blaize Whale contributed to make 25 not out. West reaching the target with several overs to spare. With the ball Timmy Turner and Colton Trethewey bowled well without luck.

Timmy claiming 1 for 16 and Nick Shurven 2 wickets for 19 and Cain Florance taking 1 for 7.

A notable mention in the field to Jackson Short for saving many runs and taking a good catch.

All in all a great contest setting things up for a big rematch in two weeks time at the Parndana school oval. Thanks to all helpers, attending family and to the Parndana school for presenting a pleasant fixture for cricket.

Look forward to seeing everyone for the rematch in two weeks time. - Ray Wadsworth
