Attendance at Kangaroo Island schools has dropped significantly as teachers and staff prepare for the impact of coronavirus on the Island.

Principal Maxine McSherry said about 35 per cent of students were still attending the three campuses at Kingscote, Penneshaw and Parndana.

"As expected the numbers are lower in the secondary classes as the older children can self-care," Mrs McSherry said.

"School closures or schools opening based on need remains a SA Government and Department for Education decision.

"Staff are remaining positive and endeavouring to ensure we keep our classrooms operating with regular routines and programs, with social distancing in place.

"Staff are developing take home learning packs and online learning resources, which can be used in conjunction with Department of Education online learning programs."

"If a closure occurs, we've been providing additional support to staff to enable this to happen."
