The families of Yvonne and Ron are thrilled to congratulate their parents on the occasion of their 60th diamond wedding anniversary, today, June 25.

Yvonne and Ron first met when Yvonne came to Kangaroo Island in January 1958 as a 19-year-old Junior Primary Teacher with her first appointment at the Parndana Camp School, which was still at the Lands Department works area.

While boarding with the family of the then chairman of the Parndana School Council, and very the same day she arrived, she met Ron who was shearing at that property.

After a dance at Parndana held in the Parndana Rec Hall, which was one of the Lands Development Executive store sheds converted Ron took Yvonne home from the dance and the rest is history.

Ron is the son of a soldier settler Bob Hams, this original farm is now managed by Ron and Yvonne's son Ronnie.

Yvonne and Ron became engaged at Easter 1959, and then on June 25,1960 they were married in the Mannum Church of England by the Reverend Peter Patterson.

They moved into a three-roomed home on a scrub block in the Hundred of Newland, having no telephone, kerosene refrigerator and kerosene light with plans and determination to build this scrub into a profitable farm.

Yvonne continued to teach at the new Parndana school, which was opened in 1959 until Easter 1961 when she left awaiting the birth of their first child.

Debbie was born on the 29th. of June, Followed by Robert in 1962 , Patricia in December of 1963 the twins Cathryn and Ronald were born in November 1965 and Katrina in 1971.

Although they always had busy times with working away and clearing the scrub and with many tough times they had great times with bringing up their children with many memories.

Ron was a very successful farmer and was able to buy the adjoining Soldier Settler farm and also the adjoining farm to his father's original property making two economical sized properties. Their eldest son Robert is managing the original farm.

Ron and Yvonne retired to live in Kingscote almost 10 years ago. Over the years the family grew with six children and their partners, 17 grand children, and nine great grand children with a 10th one expected in late July.

A big family celebration was planned for June 25 this year to celebrate the Diamond Wedding with all staying at the Mannum Caravan Park with a Saturday night celebration at the Pretoria Hotel in Mannum and then on Sunday to attend the same church at which they were married being the Anglican Church at Mannum.

Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 this had all to be cancelled as some family were to come from Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

They now plan to hold the same celebrations next year at the same time hoping that all is back to "normal".

Lots of congratulatory letters, cards, and messages have already been received including a letter from HRH the Queen; His Excellency the Honourable David Hurley Governor General of Australia; the Prime Minister the Honourable Scott Morrison; the Leader of the opposition Anthony Albanese MP; the Premier of SA Steven Marshall; the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC Governor of SA; the Leader of the State Opposition Peter Malinauskas MP; and the Federal Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie MP
