Stan Gorton's call of community duty leads to Walkley nomination

BEST OF LUCK: All eyes will be on Kangaroo Island senior journalist Stan Gorton who vies for a Walkley Award tonight.
BEST OF LUCK: All eyes will be on Kangaroo Island senior journalist Stan Gorton who vies for a Walkley Award tonight.

Stan Gorton is a community man and a journalist to be admired.

Why?

Well, when the senior journalist on Kangaroo Island found himself in one of the state's devastating bushfire zones this year, while on annual leave, his first response was to provide his community and SA with rolling updates and coverage on the ground.

Today his work as Australian Community Media journalist for The Islander continues as the island heals.

Impressively, Stan's actions have since led him to be nominated in the annual Walkley Awards with other finalists, to be announced tonight (Friday).

The awards are the pinnacle of achievement for any Australian journalist.

It benchmarks the industry standard for excellence and best practice journalism, with a shiny, pointy trophy just the icing on the cake.

Yet in true Stan style, he says his nomination is for everyone who went through the "hell of last summer" on the Island and for all those who thanked him for his coverage.

I'm hoping this can be a little silver lining for all those who lost so much and battled so bravely.

The Islander senior journalist Stan Gorton

"It's an honour and a privilege to serve my community," he said quite proudly.

"I'm over the moon to get the nomination, which will be the highlight of my career.

"Thanks to all my trusted sources who helped me with the coverage - I could not have done without you.

"I'm hoping this can be a little silver lining for all those who lost so much and battled so bravely," he said.

However, Kangaroo Island's much-loved character says he has resigned himself to "not winning".

But added, "..if I do, it's a bonus.

"Just being able to put Walkley nominee on my profile/resume/tombstone is enough," he added.

We'll soon see Stan.

Best of luck.
