Kangaroo Island Community Education (KICE) principal Maxine McSherry has been rewarded for her outstanding service to the community and to education through the Queen's Birthday 2021 Honours.

Mrs McSherry was one of three South Australian recipients of the national Public Service Medal for her leadership at the school and her contribution to the whole-of-island response and recovery after the 2019-20 bushfires.

The award extract stated Mrs McSherry has made sure students, staff, and families have had the support they need while dealing with the trauma of the fires.

"She opened her home to individuals needing to evacuate properties as she modelled how a school supports a community whilst maintaining a focus on teaching and learning," the extract read.
