Men's health in spotlight

Men's Health Week runs from June 14 to 20 to shine a light on the wellbeing of men in our community.

According to the Men's Health Week organisation, the health status of males in most countries is generally worse than that of females.

"More males die at every stages through the life course, more males have accidents, more males take their own lives and more males suffer from lifestyle-related health conditions than females at the same age," their website reads.

"Meanwhile, men are less frequent visitors to general practitioners, and the perception is that they don't care about health or that health services are not well-prepared to interact with men effectively."

There are a variety of places across the Island where men can access mental and physical health support.

One such site is the Kingscote Men's Shed, which just received a $3683 grant to run a program aimed at connecting men on Kangaroo Island through activity.

The grant, from Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal, will increase local connectedness and social recovery, through restoration of a local historic wharf trolley.
