KI 8-Ball competes at Whyalla - Lucky 13!

Kangaroo Island 8-Ball Association recently competed in the SA State Championships held in Whyalla over the June long weekend.

KI came 13th out of 32 teams in its best-ever result.

The State Championship brings together city and country regions in an extremely competitive and busy weekend.

The team - captain Ralph Turbill, Khyal Stead, Colin Hopkins, Shane Sanigar, Jeff Turbill and Martin Fisher played a series of preliminary rounds Saturday and accumulated enough wins to progress to the top half of the play off finals.

"The competition was very tough," captain Ralph Turbill said. "The standard was very high, and it is a credit to our guys to be so competitive on this stage."

Assocation president also praised the efforts of the players.

"It is a great result and shows how much we have improved over the past few years," Khyal said.

"As an association, we have actively sought to improve our standard by keeping our local comp strong and hosting mini carnivals and getting external coaching."

The KI League has a 10-team competition depending on the year, and play in local venues at Kingscote, Parndana and American River.

Looking at the year ahead, Khyal is confident.

"We look like having 10-11 teams this year and we are always keen to hear from new players to join existing teams or get five people together and make a team," he said. "8 Ball is great for all ages, genders and backgrounds."

The local competition usually runs from late September to March each year.

In addition to the local competition, the KI league hosts an annual Mini Carnival.

This consists of a carnival style weekend of four to six invited teams from the mainland and usually two KI teams.

"We have been doing this for a few years now and it keeps growing in popularity. Thanks to SeaLink for supporting our league and helping the off-island players getting here," he said.

"It is a huge help for our league to secure top-flight players each year to play in this tournament.

"We are always keen to hear of any local business who would like to be involved in providing accommodation or food for these events."
