Fifteen years ago, Tina Kleeven and Eddy Rademacher opened the doors to Kangaroo Island Fresh Seafoods for the very first time.

Since then, the local eatery has been frequented by innumerable people, all of whom have agreed it's one of the best fish and chip shops they have ever visited.

The dine-in and take-away store, which is located in the Kingscote Caltex fuel complex, supplies and cooks the freshest seafood Kangaroo Island has to offer.

But this wasn't always the plan, according to Tina.

"Eddy was a commercial fisherman and always wanted a fish shop," she said.

"After losing a potential business premises, Dave Turner offered us the shop next to the Caltex rent-free until the day we opened. It took five months to turn the workshop into a fish shop.

"Then three weeks before we opened, the whole town thought it was to be a fish and chip shop and, with a push from Dave, we restructured, put the fryers in and opened."

The fish offered at KI Fresh Seafoods is caught by local fisherman and delivered to the shop door, then filleted on site, displayed for retail and wholesale, or cooked to the liking of paying customers.

KI Fresh Seafoods also offers a filleting service for those people that have been out fishing but don't know what to do next, and they can even cook your catch if required.

In 2011, KI Fresh Seafoods was named the best fish and chip shop in regional South Australia with both those living just around the corner and others who have travelled from far and wide appreciating the business.

The secret to success is simple, Tina said.

We are constantly looking for new ideas, new products, and better ways of achieving and improving what we do.
